Small Angle X-Ray Spectroscopy (NOT FUNCTIONAL)

SAXSess mc2 from Anton Paar Gmbh, Graz, Austria
X-ray source: Sealed copper tube (40 kV/50 mA, wavelength: 0.1542 nm)

Features
SAXS system contains a X-ray sealed tube with both line and point focus arrangement with a resolution (i.e. scattering vector) varying from 0.03 nm-1 to 28 nm-1. The detectors available with the system are CCD (for only small angle) and Imaging plate (IP) detector which gives simultaneous mode for small and wide angle (up to 40° 2Θ values) data collection. SAXS system has an option of external vertical and tilt alignment with Peltier Heating/ Cooling unit with a minimum temperature range from -30°C to 120°C. The system also works on reflection mode i.e. GISAXS with maximum reflection angle of 6°.

Performance
The SAXS system works with both line and point collimation mode.
  • The SAXS system works with both line and point collimation mode.
  • Acquisition can be done for both small as well as wide angle measurements.
  • Various sample holders available are flow cell, paste cell, rotor cell and variostage with the options for tilting and rotational as well as transitional movements of the sample.
Applications
SAXS is used to investigate the structure of the particles. This information is complementary to information provided by electron microscopy. SAXS can be used for
  • analyzing the size (below 100 nm) of sample
  • shape of samples and
  • their size distribution
It also gives an idea about the particle architecture by determining its
  • porosity,
  • crystallinity and
  • molecular weight.

Sample Specifications
Samples could be in the form of
  • Powders
  • Liquids
  • Gels
  • Fibers, etc.
Testing Parameters
For small angle range,
  • angle range up to 8° 2Θ
  • CCD detector is used
  • the small angle data in the form of scattering curve is provided
  • the scattering data can be further analysed for size and shape (i.e. pair-distance distribution function (PDDF) and inverse Fourier transform (IFT) evaluation).
For wide angle range,
  • angle range up to 40°
  • wide angle data is obtained using imaging plates and only provided in the form of scattering curves
Points to be noted
  • Basic understanding of SAXS is recommended before the schedule.
  • Please ensure parameters such as exposure time and the 2Θ range etc. are studied from the literature before the schedule.
  • Analysis of the data means that only IFT evaluation and PDDF would be carried out for the samples. Further evaluation of results and their interpretation should be carried out by the sample owner only.
